How GPS Can Determine If Your Fleet Is Right For Electric Vehicles (EVs)

Making the switch to Electric Vehicles (EVs) is not as simple as buying a different vehicle model. There is a range of factors to consider in ensuring the decision is right for your fleet. At Argus Tracking, we have many tools with countless benefits that will make the decision-making process easier for your business.

First things first, let’s explore what the benefits are of having EVs as your fleet vehicles and what are some things to consider before making the switch.

Benefits of Electric Vehicles:

  • They’re cheap to run. EVs are more cost-effective (fuel consumption-wise) and they’re cheaper to service in comparison to non-electric vehicles.

  • They’re environmentally friendly (if you purchase power from renewable energy sources and consider the CO2s generated to manufacture the car).

  • Great brand recognition for your company. It shows that you’ve thought about every aspect of your business including fuel emissions.

  • Easy to drive and incredibly quiet.

  • Perfect for pool fleets.

Things to consider before making an EV purchase:

  • Initially, it will be quite costly to buy the asset and install the charging infrastructure.

  • In-building infrastructure for your workplace/home also needs upgrading to Residual Current Devices (RCD). This will protect your safety switches from fires, faults and more.

  • Charging downtime for employees is at company cost. Fast chargers typically cost $10 per 100km and can take 20-30 minutes to add 100km of range to the battery. Slow chargers are also an option and are usually free, however, they require a few hours to charge. Read more about this here.

  • Insurance premiums and excesses are much higher - in our experience 300% higher. What would normally be $500, EV is $1500. This is because they are expensive to fix in the event of something going wrong.

  • They have a restricted range and are better suited to those travelling shorter distances.

  • The battery capacity is based on perfect conditions with a professional driver. It does not take into account air conditioning, radio, lights or even hills.

  • You must have a dedicated park at your work/home for charging.

  • Speeding is more prevalent and can be costly if your drivers incur speeding tickets or lose their licences. Overtaking at higher speeds is also dangerous.

  • There are limited service/repair agents.

  • Utilisation Reporting - This comprehensive report will give you a breakdown of a vehicle’s full utilisation over the day. It includes use time, drive time, idle time, stop time and much more.

  • Fuel Watch Reporting - See how much your fleet is spending on fuel and where improvements can be made to improve fuel efficiency.

  • Route Planning & Optimisation - Easily plan routes in the most efficient way that’ll not only increase driver productivity but will also save on fuel and running costs.

  • Lifetime CO2 Emissions and Fuel Consumption Reporting - See the lifetime of CO2 vehicle emissions and fuel consumption in one easy-to-view report.

  • Our tools will also increase the Health & Safety of your team and provide insight and transparency into how the fleet is operating on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis.
